First meritorious sportswoman enrolled in Indian Army

Talent scouting is very important in sports.Indian Army like other organisations has special recruitment procedures for sports persons.Talent scouting begins early: the first stage of “recruitment” is at the age of eight. Spread across the nation are 26 Boys Sports Companies (BSC) in various training centres, which have been tasked with identifying and training talented boys in the 8-14 years age group. In addition there is sports quota under which exceptional athletes are directly inducted. They are supported by the Army while the training is carried out by the federations.

Till now, only men have been selected for training at its nodes. That is changing, with a plan in the works to include women in sports training camps. This comes on the heels of the induction of female soldiers in the Corps of Military Police(CMP) in the Army.

Breaking the male bastion in Army sports nodes and Mission Olympics of the services, for the first time Summy, a national and international level sportswoman who excels in 400 metres athletics has been enrolled as a soldier in the CMP. Summy belongs to Haryana and will train for the next Asian Games and Commonwealth Games with the help of the Army which already has a commendable record of not only producing Olympic level sportspersons but have also selected and honed the talents of many sportspersons under the Mission Olympics flagship programme.

With Summy’s enrolment as a sportswoman into the CMP, we will now see more such women athletes joining the Army and taking advantage of the training facilities that it offers in order to win medals for the country.
