Captain Abhilasha Barak creates history by becoming the Indian Army’s first woman combat aviator

Captain Abhilasha (26) graduated and was awarded the coveted “wings” at a ceremony held at the Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik on completion of six months of combat Army Aviation Course on helicopters. The IAF has women helicopter pilots for almost 30 years. The Indian Navy too has women pilots flying surveillance aircrafts.

Captain Barak daughter of Col S Om Singh (Retd) is an alumnus of The Lawrence School, Sanawar. She completed her graduation in B Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Delhi Technological University in 2016 and was placed at Deloitte, USA. However, she joined the Corps of Army Air Defence in Indian Army through Officers Training Academy, Chennai, in Sep 2018.She also opted for Army Aviation Corps, knowing fully that she was then eligible for only ground duty role. However, she had qualified Pilot Aptitude Battery Test and computerized pilot selection system. She knew that the day was not far away when Indian Army would start inducting women as combat pilots.

During her service with Corps of Army Air Defence, she had excelled in the Army Air Defence Young Officers course, Air Traffic Management and Air Laws Course and was selected as a Contingent Commander for Presentation of Colours to Army Air Defence by President Ram Nath Kovind.
